Many participating students also described feeling greater pride in their culture because they had been able to engage positively with other Indigenous students. Other outcomes of the program included greater community awareness due to increased parental involvement in the program. Some Indigenous community members reported feeling a sense of ownership over the program and felt that their contributions were valued. They were also excited about the achievements of older students who had become role models for younger participants in the Program.
While Sporting Chance. The longer- term pathways of participants are unknown, although some schools have initiated follow- up measures to track the progress of former students. There was also little baseline data to establish whether their achievements came directly from the program. Student achievements may have arisen from other, unrelated school or community initiatives. Based on the characteristics of the better performing sites, however, a number of factors were identified as being critical to the future success of the program: the importance of having appropriately trained and culturally- aware staff; involvement of the local community and the development of strong external partnerships; andthat the program is embedded into the school curriculum, rather than delivered as a separate initiative. Of the seven recommendations included in the report, four are related to improving measurement processes and program evaluation. Refinements in these areas would assist to improve measurement of the impacts of the program on student achievement in the longer term.
